A Mission Entrusted

Every project has a moment when it truly begins—not when the idea first appears, but when responsibility is clearly entrusted.

For the restoration journey of Bokor Church, that moment did not arrive through a simple administrative decision, but through an act of entrustment with profound depth: the entrusting of trust, of responsibility, and of a portion of memory belonging to a structure that has endured nearly a century of upheaval.

Participation in the project was no longer merely a personal choice.
It became a commitment.

A commitment to the Church—to safeguard a space of worship.
A commitment to history—to respect what has endured.
And a commitment to the future—to ensure that every intervention today does not diminish the ability to understand the monument tomorrow.

At the moment this mission was entrusted, one thing became unmistakably clear: Bokor Church cannot be approached as a structure to be “renewed.” It calls for a different approach—more careful, slower, and deeper.

This also means accepting limits.

Not everything can be restored according to desire.
Not every trace should be erased.
And not every “more beautiful” solution is the right one.

Within these limits, the responsibility of the architect becomes more evident than ever.

The mission of restoring Bokor Church, therefore, does not lie in creating a complete or perfected image of the building, but in safeguarding its authenticity—so that it may continue to exist as a witness, rather than becoming a reconstruction shaped by the will of the present.

This requires a shift in thinking:

From “designing” to “dialoguing.”
From “intervening” to “listening.”
And from “perfecting” to “preserving.”

In this process, the architect no longer stands as the creator of form, but becomes a mediator—between past and future, between material and memory, between the structure and the community.

The mission entrusted is not meant to affirm individual capability, but to carry out a shared responsibility.

A responsibility that calls for collaboration among many: the Church, conservation experts, public authorities, and all those who accompany the project. Each brings a different perspective, yet all share a common principle: to respect the heritage as it is.

From that moment onward, the restoration of Bokor Church was no longer an emerging idea.

It became a real process—one in which every decision, however small, carries long-term consequences.

And within that awareness, the entrusted mission is no longer merely a professional duty.
